WWW readers Sarah and Adam tied the knot on a beautiful sun shining day in the Spring. They decided to head to Scotland, Balbegno Castle, to be precise for their boho tipi wedding celebrations.<\/p>\n

There was a LOT to love about their day. Firstly the uber cool attire. Sarah wore a tiered lace gown by Cymbeline<\/a> and Adam went for a mix and match combo he found on the high street. Then there were those gorgeous seasonal blooms used throughout. Not forgetting the hog roast and ceilidh band to start the party in the evening. Marvellous.<\/p>\n

THE PROPOSAL | We were on holiday in Crete and Adam popped the question one night at the top of an old ruin overlooking the bay. It was a complete surprise and we were both in a bit of a state of shock afterwards as it all seemed far too grown up for us.<\/p>\n

THE VISION | I think we knew what we didn’t want before we knew exactly what we did want (except for the tipi, that was the dream from the start). And after finding our venue, it was that which really guided our thoughts on how we wanted the day to look and go. We wanted it to be relaxed more than anything, as we are both very laid back and wanted that to be reflected on the day. We also wanted our guests to feel relaxed so we didn’t have a dress code but gave our guests the option of matching us and going for a relaxed country\/bohemian style.<\/p>\n

THE PLANNING PROCESS | Once we had the venue and tipi booked and a good idea of the vision for the day, everything else just fell into place really.<\/p>\n

The hardest part of the planning was not getting carried away and remaining within the budget, as much as possible. But the rest was easy-ish, and really enjoyable. We started planning and booking things just 12 months before the date, but most of the details were only done in the last 6 months.<\/p>\n

BUDGET | \u00a318,000 ish<\/p>\n

THE VENUE | Balbegno Castle, Fettercairn, Scotland. I fell in love with Balbegno Castle as soon as I saw it, and during my research I saw a beautiful wedding on WWW that had taken place there and I just knew it was the place for us. Adam took a bit more convincing, but once we had visited it, it stuck on him too. It was just the perfect mix of relaxed Scottish charm, with a touch of old grandeur and quirkiness, and the right sized garden for a tipi!<\/p>\n

Although neither of us are Scottish or live in Scotland, we love the country and the fact that humanist weddings are legal there (one of only 3\/4 countries in the world) made it an even easier decision.<\/p>\n

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | My dress was called ‘Houston’ and it was by Cymbeline. Tusneem, who did my alterations also made me a gorgeous belt. I can’t remember the make of my veil, but I got it half price from the shop I bought my wedding dress (no longer operating). The head garland was made by our florist and it was one of my favourite pieces from the whole day (and I still have it). All my other accessories were from the high street.<\/p>\n

FINDING THE DRESS | I always thought that I didn’t want a traditional, or, white wedding dress, but as most brides find, what I thought I wanted, wasn’t what I ended up loving. I spent hours scouring the Internet for “unique”, and “non-traditional” wedding dresses, and I tried a lot of dresses on before I found “the one”. I tried on a few Cymbeline dresses before deciding on this one. I loved all the French lace and unusual designs that you don’t see that much in British weddings. It was just the right mix for me and I felt the style of it really suited the relaxed\/country boho them that was emerging for the day.<\/p>\n

GROOM\u2019S ATTIRE | Adam wanted his clothes and his groomsmen’s to fit in with the vision of relaxed, country\/boho. Adam chose all their outfits from a mixture of high street\/online shops. And I have to say, anyone who thinks a wedding is all about the bride’s dress, or it’s the bride who takes forever to choose their dress, has never been shopping with a groom!<\/p>\n

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Adam was in charge of all the music for the day, and he spent hours creating a set list for the ceremony and reception that would play through our iPad.<\/p>\n

I found our band, Luan, just through Internet searches for ceilidh\/folk bands. When I showed Adam some of Luan’s videos and music samples he liked them immediately. It was one of our easiest decisions. And they didn’t disappoint on the day. They played traditional ceilidh songs, did some covers of folk songs and played their own stuff, and everyone loved them. They also played our first dance song, “Hey Ho” by The Lumineers.<\/p>\n

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I had 7 bridesmaids, which I know was a bit extreme considering our entire wedding party was only about 80 people, and they all chose their own dress and accessories, with the head garland being the only thing I added. I wanted the girls to be comfortable and have something that they could wear again. The dresses all came from a variety of high street shops, and my only ask was that they were all some shade of blush\/pink. They all looked amazing on the day!<\/p>\n

THE FLOWERS | We tried to use local suppliers wherever we could, and all our flowers came from a local florist in Brechin. All I did was tell them the types of flowers I liked, colours and the vision for the day and they did the rest.<\/p>\n

During the planning I hadn’t really been too bothered about the flowers, and didn’t have a big budget for them at all, but they turned out so beautiful, and everyone commented on how well they fit the theme.<\/p>\n

THE CAKE | Adam is a big cake lover, so we knew one cake wasn’t going to cut it. So we had 3, all different flavours. We used a local supplier in Fettercairn who I found on Facebook. The cakes were amazing, we just wish we’d got extra!<\/p>\n

One of my bridesmaids is a tree surgeon and made the tree stump base that the main cake sat on, out of a tree she had cut down. I thought it made the cake look even more delicious.<\/p>\n

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | I found Jenny through Internet searches. I was looking for a great photographer who took beautiful, natural\/relaxed pictures. Neither Adam or myself enjoy having our photo taken, so the thought of having to do loads of cringe-worthy poses almost put us off having a photographer all together, but after seeing Jenny’s website and the amazing wedding photos on there, and I just knew she was what we were looking for, and she didn’t disappoint. She mingled with our guests in such a lovely manner, she was completely unobtrusive and took the most beautiful photos. I love the headless one!<\/p>\n

THE DETAILS & D\u00c9COR | A hog roast buffet fit the theme perfectly, as did the locally brewed cask of ale Adam tracked down and bought for guests to just help themselves to.<\/p>\n

The favours were books, all linked in some way to travel as we both have itchy feet and wanted to pass on a little bit of our love of travel to our guests. Finding over 70 different books to do with travel wasn’t easy though, but it was great fun matching them to the guest – some worked out exceptionally well.<\/p>\n

We kept the decorations to a minimum as the castle and tipi really looked great just as they were. I just added a few bits of bunting and some lighting.<\/p>\n

We used a chalkboard for the order of the day; one of my bridesmaids made all the signs for us to direct people to the castle and then to the ceremony etc; Adam’s mum and her colleagues made our seating plan – the tables were named after places Adam and I had travelled together, and vintage postcards of those places were placed on the tables to identify them; we used China cups and mini bases for my late great-aunt to put the table flowers in; and Lois, my brilliant tree surgeon bridesmaid, brought us a log so we could have a tossing the Kaber competition.<\/p>\n

THE HONEYMOON | We had a lot of grand plans for our honeymoon (New York, then Peru and Colombia), but we quickly realised that wouldn’t be possible unless we ditched half of our wedding guests and the tipi. So we benched that honeymoon for the following year and took easy jet to Italy, and it was the perfect honeymoon in Venice, Verona and Lake Guarda.<\/p>\n

New York, Peru and Colombia sadly still hasn’t happened as our daughter Mabel came along instead. But I’m certain we’ll take her one day.<\/p>\n

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The ceremony was my favourite part of the day. We decided on a humanist ceremony as neither of us are religious, and we wanted to have more freedom in choosing where we wanted to get married and what we wanted to say.<\/p>\n

We had great celebrant, Lorna, and instead of it being formal or traditional, it was relaxed, personal and fun. And when I look back at the photos and talk to guests, it means so much to us that they really enjoyed it too. And the bits that went wrong or weren’t meant to happen, just made it even more memorable.<\/p>\n

Adam would probably say the cask of ale, and the trip with our brother-in-law to pick it up – but he’s learnt a lot about marriage in the last 2 years, so he’s saying the ceremony too.<\/p>\n

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | On the day, you suddenly don’t care about all the stuff you have spent months planning and organising, you just can’t wait to marry the person you love and celebrate with your family and friends. Anything could go wrong and you will just roll with it.<\/p>\n

If you think though that you might not be quite so laid back on the day, hire a wedding coordinator. They will contact all your suppliers 2 weeks before the day; they will be the go to person on the day for anything and everything; and they will just put your mind at rest. I had nightmares about the posh loos overflowing and how to get the chairs from the ceremony back into the tipi for the reception, but as soon as we hired Rebecca, the nightmares stopped and I couldn’t tell you if anything went wrong on the day because I didn’t care, because I didn’t need to.<\/p>\n
