Supplier Love wedding directory members Arabel Lebrusan<\/a> are sharing their top tips today for matching your metals when choosing your wedding band. It’s something I ummed and ahhed over when choosing my own ring, so I think this advice is invaluable today…<\/p>\n

Does the wedding ring need to be the same metal type as your engagement ring?<\/h2>\n

Engagement rings are usually given months or possibly even years before a wedding. When you choose the perfect ring, you are often considering what your future fianc\u00e9 will love.<\/p>\n

You may not consider that the metal and look of the engagement ring will also affect the wedding band that comes later.<\/p>\n

So, does the wedding band need to be the same metal type as your engagement ring…? If you choose a metal that you don\u2019t particularly care for, you may find yourself trying to come up with a compromise later…<\/p>\n

Our Recommendation<\/strong><\/p>\n

We do recommend that your engagement ring and your wedding band be made of metals that have the same hardness. This is so that they do not scratch each other. For example, platinum is much harder than gold. If you place a gold engagement ring against a platinum wedding band, you\u2019ll almost assuredly experience scratching on the gold ring.<\/p>\n

If you have an engraved band, like our \u201cAthena Ethical Diamond Engagement Ring<\/a>\u201d, you should stick with the same metal for the wedding band. A platinum wedding ring will rub the engraving on the gold engagement ring, making it wear down much faster. If you want your rings to last as long as possible, the same metal, or at least two metals of the same hardness, are preferred.<\/p>\n

For easy reference, gold has a hardness level on the Mohs scale of around 2.5, depending on how many karats. Platinum is a 3.5 on the Mohs scale. Silver is a 2.5, making it a good choice for mixing with a gold ring. White gold runs between a 2.8 and a 4, so you may be able to mix white gold with platinum if you are careful. Tungsten is a 7.5. Titanium is a 6.<\/p>\n

Mixing Colours
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just because you can\u2019t mix certain metals doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t get the stylish and unique look of mixed metals. Gold comes in many colours, making it easy to mix and match. You could wear an engagement ring in rose or yellow gold, and a classic white gold wedding band for an interesting change.<\/p>\n

In fact, this trend has been growing in the fashion world over the last two years. White gold and rose gold gold are near each other on the Mohs scale, and are a classic combination. Imagine a white gold ring reflecting the pinkish tones of a rose gold ring, with beautiful diamonds adorning both.<\/p>\n

This is a great way to come to a compromise if you and your fianc\u00e9 have different tastes in metal. Perhaps one loves the way yellow gold looks, and the other prefers white gold. If you have different skin tones, this is a good way to compliment both. By mixing the colours of gold and certain recommended metals, you can create a wedding set that is as unique as you, and that will last as long as possible.<\/p>\n
