We’re continuing the romance this afternoon with a chic and really rather splendid affair in the city.<\/p>\n

James and Charlie were married on the 1st October 2016 at Stoke Newington Town Hall followed by a good old knees up at The Londesborough Pub<\/a> in London. They envisioned a minimalist city wedding with 1970s touches, and the day turned out so<\/em> beautifully. Informal, relaxed and fun vibes were key, with personal music choices and unique readings at their ceremony. Their DJ also put together what sounded like an amazing set list to ensure the party was in full swing all evening.<\/p>\n

Charlie chose her boho meets free spirited short frock by Indiebride London<\/a> and accessorised her look with a short veil by AM Faulkner and block heels. Didn’t she look amazing? James was suited and booted the week before in Ted Baker complete with a Mrs Bow Tie<\/a> floral tie, very dashing.<\/p>\n

THE PROPOSAL | We\u2019d been together for two and a half years, had some drunken, and then increasingly sober, conversations about getting married\u2026we chose and bought my ring together without telling anyone, then panicked about how people would react to the lack of \u2018proposal\u2019! On holiday in Wales, we went for a walk with the ring, and on top of a hill we snapped a couple of selfies, then we texted our families and waited for the phone calls to come in! My dad\u2019s first words were \u201cbut you can\u2019t be engaged, James hasn\u2019t asked my permission!\u201d<\/p>\n

THE VISION | Informal, fun, relaxed, and within our modest (decent thanks to generous parents, but very modest in terms of weddings!) budget. Neither of us is religious, and it was important to us that the ceremony was modern and religion-free. Aesthetically\u2026 somewhere between minimalist city wedding meets 1970\u2019s East London pub wedding\u2026 sounds slightly bizarre but we knew exactly what we wanted.<\/p>\n

THE PLANNING PROCESS | After quickly deciding that we wanted to do it in London, we researched and decided on the venues together. Naturally being a bit of a control freak, I sorted most of the rest of it, but James had input on everything.<\/p>\n

As with all UK weddings, the only thing we couldn\u2019t plan was the weather! A couple of days before, the forecast was looking extremely grim, with heavy rain forecast for the duration of our wedding, almost to the hour! We decided that our original plan of having everyone walk together between the town hall and the pub (less than half a mile) was too risky, as we didn\u2019t want guests with soggy feet. Somehow, James managed to find an available vintage routemaster bus, and we surprised our guests with it waiting to pick us up outside the town hall. It was a big hit, and they even threw in a couple of circles around the block for free! So we didn\u2019t feel too bad that despite the forecast, by the time we came out of the town hall, the sun had made an appearance!<\/p>\n

THE VENUE | London has some beautiful town halls, and the art-deco style Stoke Newington Town Hall was perfect for us. The building itself is lovely both outside and in, and we really like the villagey feel of Stoke Newington. We found The Londesborough, a pub around the corner from the town hall, on a wedding blog. We loved the proximity to the town hall and the fact that it was all on one level, and had outside space. The staff were absolutely brilliant, and took care of everything, answering all our questions in the run up to the wedding, arranging a wine tasting evening for us to select wines, and setting up all the decorations on the day.<\/p>\n

FINDING THE DRESS | I knew I wanted something short and white, initially searching the high street and The Outnet. I found Indie Bride on Instagram, and instantly loved their 70s style Gabriele dress\u2026 especially the sleeves! My mum came with me to their showroom to try it on, which is a gorgeous and slightly spooky attic inside a church in Brixton. My veil was from the talented AM Faulkner, a London-based milliner \u2013 who I also found on Instagram.<\/p>\n

GROOM\u2019S ATTIRE | In typical relaxed James style, he picked up his entire outfit about a week before the wedding. His dark blue suit was Ted Baker, his floral tie was from Mrs Bow Tie, and he wore Paul Smith brogues, which were literally delivered on the morning of the wedding!<\/p>\n

THE READINGS & MUSIC | For the ceremony we wanted songs which meant a lot to us, but which kept the mood light! I walked down the aisle to \u2018Glass in the Park\u2019 by Alex Turner, from one of our favourite films \u2018Submarine\u2019. We signed the register to songs by Bob Dylan and This is the Kit, and we exited to \u2018Something in the air\u2019 by Thunderclap Newman. Our siblings did readings that we had picked \u2013 my brother Josh read the lyrics to Baz Luhrmann\u2019s \u2018Wear Sunscreen\u2019, and James\u2019 sister Aleesha read Hovis Presley\u2019s poem \u2018I rely on you\u2019.<\/p>\n

James\u2019 friend Lewis DJ\u2019d in the evening, playing an awesome mix of glam rock, indie disco circa 2006, and 90s pop tunes! Our first dance was Starman by David Bowie\u2026we are both huge Bowie fans.<\/p>\n

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My 15 year old cousin Grace made a beautiful bridesmaid, wearing a pale pink swing dress from ASOS. We wanted to keep our wedding party small, and I couldn\u2019t choose just one or two of my girlfriends, so instead of having grown up bridesmaids my best friends Hannah and Vicky acted as Best Women and gave a hilarious speech at dinner! We all got ready together at The Ace Hotel in Shoreditch, breakfasting on pancakes in their restaurant Hoi Polloi, then we were joined by make-up artist Nohelia to get us wedding-ready. James got ready with his Best Man Luke and a few best pals at the Montcalm Hotel nearby.<\/p>\n

THE FLOWERS | The wonderful Rachael at Grace & Thorn did our flowers. She captured what we wanted perfectly \u2013 sugary shades of pale pinks, lilacs and pale blues but nothing too \u2018formed\u2019 \u2013 we loved the wild, natural look that Grace & Thorn are great at. Getting married in a town hall meant we didn\u2019t need to worry about separate ceremony flowers, which helped with our budget for the bouquets and buttonholes, and for the pub. We had mismatched glass, copper and concrete jars on the tables, and a big arrangement at the entrance.<\/p>\n

THE CAKE | I LOVE cake. Spending loads of money on a giant cake was something that made me disproportionately happy. We had a two-tier cake from Hackney\u2019s Violet \u2013 a chocolate devil\u2019s food cake sponge, with salted caramel swiss buttercream icing, topped with natural flowers. I massively over estimated how much we would need and there was loads left over at the end of the night. It ended up travelling back to North Wales with my family where my dad and uncle gave it a good home!<\/p>\n

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | A colleague of James\u2019 recommended the wonderful Laura @ Curious Rose Photography. We met up with her a couple of times before the big day and she did a little practice session with us to help us loosen up\u2026 neither of us are naturals in front of the camera! She was amazing on the day, and her informal, natural style suited us perfectly.<\/p>\n

THE DETAILS & D\u00c9COR | The backdrop of the pub was awesome anyway – they have lots of vintage music posters up on the walls, and fairy lights on the ceiling. They provided chairs, tables, crockery, cutlery, white table linen\u2026 so we only had to think about the fun bits! We kept our decorations soft and simple to add a bit of romance. Big white balloons with white tassel tails from Bubblegum Balloons sat atop the tables. Favours were small white paper bags filled with pastel coloured pick and mix, and secured with pale pink monogrammed stickers. I bought 3D cardboard tables numbers and a postbox from Hobbycraft and painted them all copper. I made a big collage of pictures of us both growing up which the pub hung up. James\u2019 design skills came in very handy for designing and typesetting the order of the days, name cards and table plan, which he got printed at a local printers.<\/p>\n

THE HONEYMOON | We spent a week in Dubrovnik, Croatia, at the amazing hotel Villa Dubrovnik. We explored the old town, swam in the sea, drank cocktails at the hotel\u2019s rooftop bar, and used their lovely spa!<\/p>\n

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The whole day was wonderful\u2026 it might sound like a clich\u00e9, but there are so few occasions in life when you have all your nearest and dearest together in one room! Although the moment where James jumped on his friend Russell\u2019s shoulders, splitting Russell\u2019s trousers completely open, was pretty hard to beat.<\/p>\n

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Don\u2019t stress about divorced parents, or certain people not getting on. Make sure the day is exactly what you both want, and your families will surprise you by all getting along together and having a great time!<\/p>\n
