I was never not going to love a wedding in the woods with a bride that is a florist now was I? I fell hook line and sinker for this intimate, loving and special day, let me share why…<\/p>\n

WWW readers Martin and Amy tied the knot on the 13th August 2016 in a humanist ceremony surrounded by 15 of their loved ones. It was the same spot where Martin popped the question, in Amy’s parent’s back garden. I always think it’s lovely to plan a wedding where it all began, somewhere super meaningful and where future visits can also take place. The woodland is just beautiful and in mid August it was full of life with lush ferns and ancient tree canopies. It’s no wonder that they chose a clear sided marquee for their reception to admire those views, perfect for their large wedding party.<\/p>\n

They created the most gorgeous day. The blooms were obviously out of this world beautiful, and consisted of pink and marsala stems all tied up with reams of ribbon. There were some lovely quirky d\u00e9cor touches too; rustic furniture, a custom neon sign and butter cream cake to name a few. Not to mention their awesome outfit choices, so much style all round.<\/em><\/p>\n

THE PROPOSAL | Martin proposed in the woods behind my parents house\u00a0on 30th November 2014. We hadn’t had a day off together in months, which at the time, was fairly normal for us. We booked a weekend off at the end of November to look after my parent\u2019s house while they were away and to finally spend some much needed time together. Whilst we were on a walk in the woods on the Sunday afternoon, he asked me if I would like to be his wife.<\/p>\n

THE VISION | Quite quickly in the planning process, we decided that our dream wedding venue would be my parent\u2019s house. We had our hearts set on having our ceremony where we got engaged in the woods. After a few months of figuring out the logistics of it, we started book suppliers for the day hoping that all the issues of having a wedding at home would sort themselves out over time and with some meticulous planning.<\/p>\n

THE PLANNING PROCESS | Because we had the wedding at home, everything was down to us making sure we had enough space for all of our guests to sit comfortably at dinner and making sure the day ran smoothly and on time. Our guest list was probably the hardest aspect of planning as we both have quite big families but we had very limited space. To be honest, we didn’t have our guest list finalised until quite late on but over time we managed to stretch out the size of the wedding and eventually managed to fit everyone in.<\/p>\n

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | After having a lot of fun trying on several wedding dresses, I decided that a formal wedding dress didn’t suit the wedding we were planning. I decided to buy two dresses by Self Portrait and sew them together to make one long dress. Using skills learned during uni (studying Fashion Design) and with the help of Martin’s mum, I restructured the top and changed the lining to try and make it into my dream dress. It ended up being a combination of all the dresses I’d tried on and loved while still looking like the beautiful Self Portrait dress I’d fallen in love with.\u00a0For accessories, I bought a beautiful pair or silver glittery platforms from And Other Stories but I ended up only wearing them during the meal, for the rest of the day, I wore Dr Marten Chelsea boots. For the reception, I wore a starburst necklace by Lulu Frost X Whistles.<\/p>\n

GROOM\u2019S ATTIRE | Martin, both our dads, my grandpa, Martin’s nephew and the best man all hired kilts, jackets and shirts from Slaters in Aberdeen & Glasgow. Martin picked a grey and black tartan.<\/p>\n

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We decided to have only 15 people at our wedding ceremony, it was short and simple and perfect for us. We decided early on to have a humanist ceremony and were lucky enough to have two celebrants, Bryan Begg and Louise Mcallister. They were wonderful and very calming on the day. They\u00a0made our ceremony very personal. During the reception we had Dave Mackay band play. They are a fantastic ceilidh band and were so amazing at\u00a0getting everyone up to dance. They played some beautiful slow songs (mainly written by Dave Mackay) and lots of fast ones, it was amazing to see all our friends and family connect in a way you only really can at a lively ceilidh (by flinging each other around the room).<\/p>\n

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I asked my sister to be my maid of honour\u00a0and Martin’s two sisters to be our bridesmaids and both our niece’s to be our flower girls, I asked them all to pick dresses that were somewhere between pink, marsala and burgundy, they all ended up picking dresses that were pale pink. They all looked different but matched and looked super together on the day. I’m so glad they all found something that made them feel amazing.<\/p>\n

THE FLOWERS | As a florist, I decided to do all our wedding flowers myself. I knew early on how I wanted them to look but only decided the day I was ordering them what colours I was going to go for. I found some amazing flower suppliers like The Real Flower Co. and Blooming Bees to supply me with the most stunning garden roses and wild flowers, collecting them three days before the wedding was one of the most exciting parts for me. I finally decided on a pale pink to burgundy colour palette and was over the moon with the way they turned out. The most challenging part, which I couldn’t have predicted was how hard it was to juggle being the bride and the florist along with all the other last minute tasks that are involved when your wedding is at home. But I still wouldn’t change a thing.<\/p>\n

THE CAKE | Our cake was made for us by Martins aunt Mary. We asked for a simple two tier white cake with rough icing. She made it perfectly, we decorated it with flowers and my mum and dad’s old cake topper on the day.<\/p>\n

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | The first big decision we made when planning our wedding was our photographer. We knew very early on that we wanted to try and get Caro Weiss. She had photographed my sister’s wedding and aside from being practically invisible on the day, the photographs were stunning and captured the feeling of the day perfectly. Because our wedding was at home, we actually booked our wedding around Caro’s availability. The best thing about booking Caro was that we knew no matter what else happened on the day, the photos were going to be amazing. When the day came and I was still making bouquets and buttonholes right up until an hour before the wedding, Caro was the most calming and encouraging person to have around and seemed to catch the smallest details that otherwise would have been missed completely. When you get married and have the best day of your life and spend more money on things than you’ll ever spend again on one day, the thing that lasts and you can take away with you when it’s all over are the photographs and the memories so I would always recommend making sure you have a good, reliable photographer.<\/p>\n

THE DETAILS & D\u00c9COR | The two biggest aspects of d\u00e9cor for our wedding were the amazing clear marquee from Craigievar and the stunning furniture from Virginia’s Vintage Hire. they were both monumental in the look and feel of our day. We also bought festoon lights for the marquee and the garden from Cox and Cox and collected vintage brass candlesticks throughout our engagement most of which were bought on Sunday trips to the Barras in Glasgow. We had a neon sign made saying ‘La Vie En Rose’, which was the title of our first dance song. I also took total advantage of all the wonderful bits and bobs my mum had lying around the house and garden including Persian rugs and a big wooden architects desk. The main feature of the d\u00e9cor was the amazing view over the fields and trees\u00a0seen perfectly through the clear marquee.<\/p>\n

THE HONEYMOON | After the wedding, we took some time winding down at my parents house, it’s in such beautiful setting and is definitely the place we feel most relaxed, It was lovely to be surrounded by all the decorations and flowers while they lasted. We both had to go back to work quite quickly but are saving for a trip to Japan next spring to celebrate again.<\/p>\n

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | As we only had 15 people at our ceremony, we remember it as being super chilled, which is exactly what we wanted but the best part of our day was walking down the hill after our ceremony towards all of our 130 guests waiting back at the house for us. It’s something we’ll always remember (and something Caro captured beautifully) other than that, we’ll always remember the feeling of pure joy. It stayed with us for days. From the moment we saw each other at the ceremony to our first dance to watching our guests enjoy the incredible music.<\/p>\n

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | You’ll hear this a hundred times but a lot of the time, people don’t really mean it… Do what feels right for you. It might not be right for everyone else, but you’ll know the things that are important to you and the things you don’t really want to budge on. Stick to your guns because when it all works out, everyone else sees why you did it that way. Try not to get stressed by things, weddings are meant to be enjoyed by everyone but especially you so make sure, during every bit of the planning process to step back and think how lovely it is to be planning a wedding. And finally, enjoy the day, no matter what happens, remember what it is all about. Don’t let anything bother you, even if it isn’t quite what you expected. As long as you are married to the love of your life at the end of the day, nothing else matters.<\/p>\n
