Skin always has and always will have a mind of its own, but with the right products, a little considered TLC, and some gentle coercion (and let’s be honest here, sometimes a few test runs) it is possible to get a good skincare regime in order that will deal with whatever your skin is throwing at you.

Image: Emily and Katy of beautiful Ms Moo Make Up real bride Jennifer

Your make up artist will discuss and help you with all your concerns at your bridal trial and help reassure you. Every wedding make up artist will be able to tell you the importance of skincare as your wedding makeup will look at its absolute best when the canvas (i.e. your skin) has been prepped to be at its absolute best!

Wedding Make Up & Skin Problems

As I’m not a cosmetologist or skincare specialist so I’m not able to give you guaranteed advice. That said, you can speak with your doctor for advice and a referral to a dermatologist if needs be. There are many skincare specialists out there to discuss your needs with. You can often book consultations online and use any payment made to secure that appointment against products or treatments.

You’ll have heard of each of my top five pieces of advice for wedding preparations before, but it’s good to remember each one and WHY they are important, and what to do!

1. Protect Your Skin

Get some SPF in your life! You’re not going to want any dodgy tan lines before your wedding, so avoid strappy tops and vests this coming spring. Don’t be tempted by any early signs of the summer unless you’ve got some factor 50 on or will be staying in the shade! If you don’t already have SPF in your daily routine for your face, get some in your life. Your skin will thank you for it in the future.

2. Have A Good Scrub

There’s nothing better than a good body scrub in the shower to make you feel shiny and new, and your face feels the same. Whether you do that with a chemical scrub or an abrasive one is your choice but start doing it maybe twice a week. Exfoliating improves the texture of your skin but also brightens it and your wedding make-up will apply so much smoother. When it comes to your wedding, I recommend exfoliating the day before your trial and wedding day for fresh skin. If you’ve not exfoliated, mention it to your wedding make up artist who’ll be able to include some exfoliating in your wedding day skin prep to make sure there’s no lurking dry skin problems.

3. Moisturise The Outside

There are oil-based moisturisers AND oil-free moisturisers available so pick one depending on what your skin is like. Your wedding make up will only look as good as your skin does and it needs to be deeply hydrated for it to look good. It can’t be faked either so take the time with your skincare to improve your final wedding make up look.

4. Hydrate The Inside

Sounds super easy but so many forget to hydrate. Your body is made up of over 55% of water and you need to keep hydrated so your organs can keep working at peak performance. Drink water or sugar-free squash. Something that’s going to hydrate you; that’s not tea, coffee or cola unfortunately. Perhaps you can drink a glass of water while you’re waiting for the kettle to boil if you’re a caffeine fiend 🙂

5. Clean Your Brushes

It’s important to get into a good routine of cleaning your own make up brushes regularly but so much more so if you’re struggling with problem skin. I tend to clean my personal brushes every 7-10 days but if I get a breakout, I clean them straight away and keep them clean between uses. This is done using 99% isopropanol and a flannel. Just spray a small amount on the brush or dunk a big brush in a small amount and then gently rub the brush on a flannel in circular motions until it’s clean. You can also spray isopropanol on make up products (stick concealer, lipstick, eyeshadows etc) to sanitise them.

6. On The Wedding Day!

If it all goes Pete Tong before your wedding, DO NOT worry further; contact your make up artist as early as possible. They’ll be able to give you some words of wisdom and advice on what to do! You should feel reassured that your professional will know what to do.

Any dry skin will be exfoliated and hydrated and the right products will be used to stop it looking dry as the day wears on. Any blemishes will be examined, soothed and concealed. Any wry brows or hairs on your face can be tweezed, groomed and tamed. Your best features will be highlighted and you will look and feel the best possible version of your self for the day.

There are techniques and tricks of the trade in our kit.
