I love getting to know brilliant photographers, finding out all about their passions and seeing their favourite images.

Today I am chatting with Surrey based photographer; Sophie Duckworth all about her wedding photography business.  With her background in fine art, Sophie captures her couples creatively using gorgeous light.

Let’s see some more of her work…

Hi Sophie, could you firstly tell WWW readers a little bit about you?

Well hello there! I’m Sophie, I’m a newlywed living in leafy Surrey and have two house rabbits, Toby and Flora who quite frankly are my substitute children! I love painting, photography (of course), The Simpsons, baking (Delia beats Mary for me I’m afraid), yellow freesias and cars. My husband and I collect classic Volkswagens and spend most of our holidays camping down in Devon and Cornwall in our splitscreen camper (when it hasn’t broken down on the way!)

What do you love/dislike about your job?

I LOVE running my own business, I love the freedom I have to be creative, I love all the people I get to meet, the fact I get to spend the happiest days of my couples’ lives with them and the gorgeous children I am also lucky enough to photograph in quieter seasons. I have searched high and low in my mind to find a downside to this job, the only thing I could think of was the lack of weekends I get to spend with my husband, and missing out on friends’ birthdays when I’m working. However, the good far outweighs the bad and I believe, it truly is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world.

How did you get into photography and into the wedding industry?

I have always been into photography, I’ve shot medium format film for years and did a degree in Fine Art. I am also a trained oil painter which I love to do in my spare time. I sort of fell into the wedding industry, I used to travel a lot, and sold my prints of travels in Italy in galleries until I started photographing a few of my friends’ children. I took my camera along to the one of my friend’s weddings, and was immediately hooked. I got my first paid wedding booking via twitter in 2011, and I’ve never looked back!

What do you aim to achieve for your clients?

Quite simply, my goal is to totally nail it. I go to each wedding more excited than the last, eager to capture beautiful photos that my couples will truly treasure. It sounds a bit cheesy, but I just want to create photographs that show happiness and the beauty of people when they are in love. I often find it’s the simplest of images that tells a million tales, and I always strive to find that ‘one’ shot that you won’t stop looking at for years to come.

What style is your work?

My style of photography is pretty laid back and relaxed with a hint of something a little bit special. I love to make the most of beautiful light, as well as the venue. Sometimes you need to wander off a little to get the perfect shot, but I try not to steal my couples away from their guests and the party too much!

Could you tell us some information about your packages/prices?

I offer two packages for weddings, 6 hours and 9 hours. Pricing starts at £1350 for the 6 hour package, although I do offer more flexible hours for weddings between Monday-Thursday.

Do you have any tips for couples in selecting their wedding photographer?

Do your research across a wide range of photographers/styles. You may think you have an idea of what you like, but I found when choosing my own photographer, I ended up choosing someone completely different! I think it’s also important you understand their terms and that you’re both clear on expectations/what you want from your wedding photos. Getting on well with your photographer is also a big deal, the rapport I have with my clients is so important and makes a massive difference in how your photos will turn out. Put your trust them, and you’ll end up with a fantastic set of photos you’ll just love.
