Hi Paul, could you firstly tell WWW readers a little bit about you?

I’m the co-founder of Entertainment Nation, but my background is as a professional musician. I studied music to degree level and have performed all over the world in various bands, on cruise ships, on TV and radio and at festivals including Reading, Leeds and Glastonbury. When I’m not running a busy entertainment agency, I can be found behind my drum kit in one of a number of professional function bands I run.

What do you love and dislike about your job?

I love the variety of the job. One day I could be working on a promotional campaign, the next learning about the minutiae of human resources. The excitement of discovering great new bands never diminishes. I still get a buzz every time we receive a submission from a band who I know will go down a storm with our clients.

The clients themselves are the other great part of the job. It’s rare to be in an industry where our “product” can make people so happy. As a company we do everything in our power to give brides and grooms the wedding band of their dreams, and it makes all the hard work worthwhile when we hear how well the entertainment went at a couple’s wedding.

Dislikes… probably the hours, which add up when you’re running a business during the week and playing 3 or 4 weddings each weekend!

How did you get into the wedding industry?

As I mentioned, my background is as a professional musician. For many years I performed at weddings with my band, obtaining work through other entertainment agencies. After a number of negative experiences that affected both musicians and clients, my business partner (also a musician) and I realised we had the experience and knowledge to set up our own agency and do things the right way, both for our clients and the bands on our books. We established Entertainment Nation and, based upon our principles of providing a personalised service and working with only the most talented and reliable musicians, have gone from strength to strength since.

Tell us about your typical working day.

I’m going to sound clichéd here… but, genuinely, no two days are the same. Depending upon the day of the week or the time of the year I could be taking calls in the office, liaising with clients and bands, filming a promotional video, working on our website, performing at wedding or one of any number of other tasks. It’s busy, but there’s always something new going on – the weeks fly by!

If you could choose another role in the wedding industry what would it be?

Perhaps a videographer or photographer. I’m a creative at heart and having had experience of putting together professionally recorded videos for my own and other bands (with the aid of expert videographers), I think it would be a fascinating and rewarding job to have.

What do you aim to achieve for your clients?

Our aim is simple: to provide our clients with their dream wedding entertainment, while keeping the entertainment hire process simple and hassle-free. We make sure we’re on hand when it’s convenient for our clients and take the time to chat through any questions or queries they might have. We’re always happy to offer advice and suggestions based on our vast experience of arranging wedding entertainment and being in wedding bands.

Expert, friendly and professional.

Could you tell us some information about your packages/prices?

Our bands set their own fees, and prices can vary depending upon the size of the band, where the wedding is taking place and the time of year.

Do you have any tips for couples in selecting their wedding band?

Our first tip is to talk to your venue before you book a live wedding band. Some venues have restrictions in place that you’ll need to know about before you start the process of hiring a wedding band. Most bands are able to work around venue restrictions, but it’s important they are aware of things like sound limiters or limited space prior to the big day!

Our second tip is to consider your guests. Before you get carried away and book a niche band who play songs only you and your partner know, think about the impact this will have on the evening – there’s nothing worse than an empty dance floor! Think about booking a band who are able to play a variety of styles of music to suit the mix of tastes found at a wedding reception.

Our third and final tip is to trust your band. A professional wedding band know exactly how to read a room and play the songs to keep everyone dancing.

We’ve just finished the first in a new series of videos featuring our bands. We can’t say any more at the moment, but we’re very excited about its imminent release!
