Hi Nikki, could you firstly tell WWW readers a little bit about you?

I’m a jewellery designer maker working in a small workshop just outside London. I’ve been making jewellery for about 10 years, and selling for about 4. I use traditional techniques and quite simple hand tools, it’s a very old fashioned craft in a lot of ways.

What do you love and dislike about your job?

Making is an incredibly rewarding way to spend your time and my favourite days are the ones I spend at the bench. I also love creating wedding jewellery as it’s a symbol of something so positive, and is so personal to people.

I do get a little bored of polishing, it’s the least interesting part of the making process.

How did you get into the wedding industry?

I’ve always had a real fascination for rings so when I first launched my jewellery business they were the bulk of my collection. I started to be asked more and more frequently to make wedding rings so decided after a couple of years to focus more clearly on that market.

Tell us about your typical working day.

I split my days between my workshop and my office, so I’ll either have a full day of making, or a mix of paperwork and errands. Running a small business involves wearing a lot of different hats so I will swap between chatting to customers on email, working on marketing plans, ordering materials and polishing, packing and shipping orders.

If you could choose another role in the wedding industry what would it be?

I did part of a floristry course several years ago and have helped out occasionally with weddings. I absolutely love flowers so that is something I would really enjoy.

What do you aim to achieve for your clients?

I make each of my pieces individually by hand so I’m able to tweak and adjust items to make sure they work for each person. I try to provide as much information as I can and help people find a balance between practicality and the look they want.

I offer a bespoke wishbone service where I make wishbone rings to fit around different shapes of engagement ring. I am regularly told by clients that they have purchased interesting vintage or new engagement rings and found that most jewellers offer nothing except plain bands to match them.

How would you describe your style in three words?

Elegant, simple, delicate.

Could you tell us some information about your packages/prices?

My standard designs start from £55. I offer a silver prototype service for £20 for bespoke pieces which need to fit with a specific engagement ring.

Do you have any tips for couples in selecting their wedding rings?

The price of most rings is generally driven by the cost of the precious metal, it’s all about weight so consider if you would prefer a more expensive metal and don’t have the budget you might need to go for a slimmer/narrower ring.

When looking at pieces for everyday wear consider the long term maintenance of the items.

There is a fashion at the moment for lots and lots of teeny pave stones, these rings need to be professionally checked every few years to ensure the settings aren’t loose or you will start to lose stones.

With white gold, most commercially sold items will be plated in rhodium which is a brighter white than either 9ct or 18ct white, but the plate is a temporary coating and the colour of what is underneath will start to show after a while, requiring regular replating to maintain it.

Are you seeing any trends for the year ahead?

Rose gold still seems to be everywhere, which I am a huge fan of. It’s very flattering for most people and goes with everything.

Can you give us a teaser about what you are working on now?

I’ve recently launched some new slightly larger stone set rings (still very delicate but I really do like very teeny things!) which have been very popular. I’m working on a necklace and bracelet in the same style. Sometimes simplicity is the hardest thing to achieve I’m really aiming for something very clean in appearance, I’m on about my 5^th prototype.
