Hiya,

I just wanted to say thank you so much for creating such an amazing seating plan template – we’re getting married on 16th, and I had the tables all ready in Excel, but putting them in place on a doc was causing so much stress.  Thank you so much!

How Do I Plan My Wedding Table Layout?

To plan your wedding tables, firstly liaise with your venue. Work out their popular and recommended layouts and scope out their tables. For example, do they have round or long tables?

Then look at whether there are any no-gos. For instance, is there an emergency exit that needs to be clear or a plug point you need for your lighting?

If you are having a DIY wedding venue, do a recce and work out the practicalities. Then look into which table shapes you’d like to hire.

Do you want to have a top table at the head of the room or a middle table where guests surround you? Perhaps you’d like a sweetheart table for the two of you to avoid any family politics. You may feel more self-conscious being sat in front of everyone, or you may wish to be front and centre. Either is fine. The most important thing? To do what you feel comfortable with and excited about.

If you are worried about being looked at during your meal, don’t fret. Guests will be busy eating, drinking and chatting amongst themselves to be watching you diligently.

Top Tips On Choosing Seating Wedding Layout

Choosing where guests sit can be one of the more emotionally charged parts of wedding planning. A lot of thought and stress can go into working out your seating plan. But, and this is a big but. Never, ever forget, this is your day and you need to do what you feel is right. Don’t feel you have to discuss seating arrangements prior to the day, you don’t have to!

That being said, if you do have some family divides and don’t know how to overcome them there are ways and means to do so. Firstly, if you have someone you trust to confide in, have a chat with them about the options. If you can, speak to the guest you are concerned about and see what they feel. They actually may not mind sitting with the person that they don’t get on with, or they may feel uncomfortable being at the top table.

Always try to be consistent. Giving one guest special treatment may leave other guests feeling left out. Or if you won’t change one table, try not to change others. Another key thing is to both back each other as a couple and have a plan on how to deal with requests before they come along. You can’t go around asking everyone’s mind due as you’ll be in a pickle with seating requests left, right and centre.

As a rule of thumb, seat guests in family and friendship groups. For the top table, choose your wedding party and parents/carers/guardians. The top table is a way of rewarding those who are nearest and dearest to you for supporting you during your relationship and planning your wedding.  It’s also great to allow your wedding photographer some more natural wedding shots of the wedding party as they let their hair down, and laughing at the speeches.  If there isn’t space keep it simple and choose your closest loved ones. You know your family and friends best, so if you do want to give a heads up to someone feel free to.

Last but not least, you could ditch the plan altogether and let guests choose wherever they wish! I’ve featured a few weddings that have done so, and it may be a winner. But you will have to let go and remember on the day, it could take a little longer for guests to settle down for dinner.
