Are you still struggling to find the perfect wedding dress? Or perhaps something special for your favourite girls to wear?

This afternoon i have the pleasure of speaking with Wendy from Flossy and Dossy. Flossy and Dossy is an independent dress designer based in Glasgow that also create bridal wear with a vintage feel.

Hi Wendy, could you firstly tell WWW readers a little bit about you?

Hello – my name is Wendy and I’m the face behind Scottish designer Flossy and Dossy. I’ve been designing and making clothes for years, and love to sew! It’s my passion and even when I’m not working I can usually still be found at the sewing machine, running up something for myself.

What do you love/dislike about your job?

I struggle to think of anything that I don’t enjoy about my job, and feel both happy and grateful that I’ve managed to turn something I feel so passionately about into a career. I love involving each client with the design process, and watching the dress materialise over time from a rough sketch to a finished gown; I especially enjoy the reaction from brides when they get exactly the dress they wished for. If there’s anything I’m not too keen on it’ll be doing the tax return – but that’s such a tiny inconvenience in the scheme of things.

How did you get into fashion and into the wedding industry?

I’ve always been fascinated by how clothes are designed – particularly from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s; not only how each dress hangs upon a figure, but also the technical aspect of how it’s put together. I started making my own designs a few years ago, and started Flossy and Dossy back in 2009 with the intention of bringing these vintage-inspired frocks to life. However, as Flossy began to grow, I found that more and more customers saw the possibilities of my designs as wedding gowns – the type of frock that reflects a bride’s personality far more than the off-the-peg options available elsewhere – and things soon spiralled from there. Once I had made a few wedding dresses I realised how much I enjoyed making them and working with brides, as it’s so much more involved and rewarding.

What do you aim to achieve for your clients?

The starting point always has to be transferring a bride’s dream into reality, A dress that they not only feel happy and comfortable wearing, but something that her feel special. I also want them to enjoy the process of having a dress made as it’s not something a lot of people get to experience.

What style is your work?

I’m heavily influenced by decades of the past – particularly the fashion photography of the time, and of course the wonderful frocks featured in Hollywood movies; the designer Edith Head was a particular influence. I make a lot of 1950s style dresses with nipped in waists and big skirts and love working with lace.

Could you tell us some information about your pricing?

My 1950’s style dresses start at £350 and rise from there depending on design, fabrics and embellishments.  My long dresses start at £500 and rise from there along the same lines.  For a completely bespoke dress design prices start at £750.

Do you have any tips for couples in selecting wedding suppliers?

I would always advise arranging a meeting with the supplier so that you can chat to them face to face so that you can explore your ideas together, and arrive at something that’s wonderful.
