Interview: David Gaffney of Stunning Photography

This week we chat with David Gaffney of Stunning Photography, in our interview series where we find out about the people behind the camera.

How long have you been photographing weddings for and how did you get into it?
I’ve been photographing weddings for 15 years now. I spent my early years travelling around Europe as a professional dancer. I was the only one with a camera and was always snapping away. After my dancing career ended, I bought a recording studio and spent a few years working as a songwriter. Again, I always had my camera with me, and it wasn’t long before I began photographing the local bands that came to record at my studio. My partner, who worked in the wedding industry, suggested I try my hand at wedding photography, and it seemed like a natural progression. I still write the odd song, but I much prefer making music with my camera.

What do you particularly like about photographing weddings?
What’s not to like about weddings? I won’t give you a bunch of sentimental clichés about capturing loving, cherished moments. It’s a massive party, and I’m paid to be there. It doesn’t get much better than that.

How would you describe your style and approach?
I don’t really have a particular style or approach, as each client requires me to be a slightly different type of photographer. There’s no point being Timmy Mallett if your client is a bit uptight and camera-shy. Sometimes, a more subtle approach is needed. I like to blend into the guests like a ninja—the less seen of me, the better.

What advice would you give to couples looking for a wedding photographer?
Choosing a photographer is like choosing a venue—you know right away when it’s the right fit. If the photos blow you away, go for it. The modern bride will always communicate her needs clearly, so the days of the bossy, shouty photographer are over.

What tips would you share with couples to help their day go more smoothly?
I always formulate a plan with my clients, which usually involves a venue visit. Plan for both good and bad weather—always have wellies and umbrellas on hand. Most importantly, enjoy yourself with abandon. It’s always a shame when a bride is uptight, as no amount of Photoshop can correct a grumpy expression.

Finally… Whats the best moment you’ve had as a wedding photographer?
I’ve had many favourite moments over the years, but being voted the most popular photographer worldwide in the Wedding Industry Expert 2014 Awards has to take the top spot.
