Today i have the pleasure of introducing to you the lovely London based wedding photographer, Jonny Donovan Photography. Jonny is a documentary wedding photographer, who will let you enjoy your day whilst taking beautiful, classic and fresh images. Take it away Jonny….
{w} Hi Jonny, could you firstly tell {www} readers a little bit about you?
Hi. My name is Jonny and I’m a wedding photographer. I live in London but I travel quite a bit and have photographed weddings as far away as Tanzania! I would describe myself as friendly but I know others might say I’m a bit of a dork.
{w} What do you love/dislike about your job?
I love photographing emotion. When my images make other people happy, it makes me feel good. I’m really lucky with how much travel I get to do with my job and I love meeting new people. Photographing weddings is a real privilege because everyone looks fabulous and there’s so much feeling around – plus with everything going on nobody notices the camera – it’s basically a photographer’s dream scenario.
What do I dislike?
Admin. Particularly spreadsheets. Also, I wish they could make camera equipment a little lighter.
{w} How did you get into photography and into the wedding industry?
I’ve always been fascinated by people and the way we interact. I used to work abroad as a journalist for the BBC World Service, which is where I got into photography. A few years after I came home I realised that I was photographing quite a few weddings, and that I was really enjoying it, so I thought I should take it seriously. Now weddings make up a large portion of my work, but I also photograph portraits, children and families and editorial commissions. Anything with people in it.
{w} What do you aim to achieve for your clients?
I want to make images that my clients will love. Images that show what people felt on the day, not just how they looked. And I want my clients to enjoy the experience as much as I do.
{w} What style is your work?
I am a documentary wedding photographer so I tell the story of your day with beautiful, emotive photographs taken without intrusion.
For most of the day I shoot in a photojournalistic style, blending in with your guests. Then I’ll spend 15-20 minutes getting some beautiful images of you two together. I won’t make you do anything uncomfortable or weird, just fresh, natural images with you both looking great.
{w} Could you tell us some information about your packages/prices?
I charge £1100 to photograph an entire wedding; beginning with the preparations in the morning, right up until the evening’s dancing is well underway. All I care about is getting the best possible images for you so there’ll be no checking my watch while great moments are happening behind me. A full day’s photography means exactly that.
You’ll then receive a beautifully boxed disc containing all the best images of the day, fully edited and looking gorgeous, and yours to reproduce as you desire.
I also have a range of fine albums and prints on request.
{w} Do you have any tips for couples in selecting their wedding photographer?
Choosing a photographer is such a personal decision. Loving their portfolio is a must, but I think it’s also quite important that you feel comfortable in their presence. After all, they are going to be there for some very intimate, once-in-a-lifetime moments.
I also think it’s a good idea to ask to see examples of a photographer’s prints. Viewing a portfolio on a computer is fine but wedding photographers shoot for albums and prints, so you need to make sure that they can get great results on paper.
