Why We Love Smoke Bomb Wedding Photographs

This year has seen some awesome trends, but one we can’t get enough of is smoke bombs in photographs. Available in lots of different shades, they’re a great way to add atmosphere to your portraits and get some brilliantly colourful images.

Safety First

Talk to your photographer about sourcing the smoke bombs and make sure you think about safety – they’re only suitable for outdoors and, depending on the type you use, you may need to wear gloves to protect your hands from the heat. The smoke can irritate your eyes and throat so be careful where you’re holding them. If it’s a really windy day, it might not be possible to use a smoke bomb and if it’s a hot dry day, it’s particularly important to make sure you pour water over it afterwards

Once lit, the smoke bomb only lasts 45-90 seconds so your photographer will need to set up the shot and you will need to be ready! If you’re planning a group shot, this may take a little bit of coordination.

Go big, go bold and go wild with colour like these couples. Holding the smoke bomb aloft creates a powerful statement and is also a lot of fun! Whether you do it during your couple’s portraits or get other guests involved, it’s sure to be a great experience and leave you with some fantastic images. Just make sure you hold it as near to the base as possible to avoid burning your hand and hold well away from that beautiful white dress, the colour in the smoke bomb can stain!

Whether you match the colour to your theme or contrast with all the colours of the rainbow, there is a wide variety of shades to choose from.

Surround Yourself With Colour

For a slightly more subtle effect you might want to consider having the smoke bombs in the background of your shot like these stylish couples.

White Haze

For an even more ethereal effect, white smoke bombs are just perfect. From a smoky haze to just the suggestion of a faint mist, you can create such an atmospheric portrait.
