Hi Marty, could you firstly tell WWW readers a little bit about you?

 

Hi, I am Marty from WEDFEST. I am a graphic designer turned wedding stationer. I am married to a Saint and have a crazy 3 year old monkey who keeps me on my toes. When not designing my main interest is live music and festivals, which is the start of this whole story.

 

What do you love and dislike about your job?

 

What I love is obviously being your own boss and the freedom to design whatever I want. Probably my absolute favourite thing is when a customer comes to me with a crazy idea or vision they have for their wedding stationery, something that they cant even explain properly, and then taking that and turning it into a design and seeing their delight when they say ‘that’s exactly what I was thinking of!’

In a nutshell the designs we produce are so exciting and fun I look forward to seeing what we come up with each day and also seeing how happy and excited our customers are to send them out. After 5 years our designs are still blowing peoples minds.

There is nothing to dislike about being your own boss and doing something that you love, which is designing and creating awesome wedding stationery. The only downside (and its not a downside) is being so busy that you end up working all the time and crazy hours, but sure it’s not like there is anything good on TV anyway.

 

How did you get into the wedding industry?

 

I started WEDFEST 5 years ago after I had designed some festival themed wedding stationery for my own wedding. I was a full time graphic designer at the time and people had saw the festival themed artwork on my website and starting requesting it. Being an avid live music and festival goer I decided to take all this inspiration and focus solely on festival and themed wedding stationery and WEDFEST was born. It quickly grew and now we supply alternative and themed wedding stationery to every corner of the world.

 

Tell us about your typical working day.

 

A working day is far from typical as what I plan for each day never ends up being what happens. I mainly wake up and answer about 100 emails each morning before starting to design. I deal with a huge amount of customers so there is a lot of planning involved in order to make sure all orders are designed and made on time. Outside of wedding invitations people generally leave things late so every day we get lots of last minute orders for things such as table plans, so each day and week is a matter of juggling all the current orders with all of the last minute orders all while drinking 10 cups of tea.

 

If you could choose another role in the wedding industry what would it be?

 

I always have had a love for photography and at one point I was starting to follow it through to become a wedding photographer. But I have always been so busy with design, and then when Wedfest started it took off so fast I just went with it and never looked back. But I still use photography on a daily basis.

 

What do you aim to achieve for your clients?

 

Anyone who comes to us is generally looking for something alternative, exciting, fun or just completely left field. We aim to bring their ideas to life and create wedding stationery that is a reflection of who they are or what they want to achieve.

 

What style is your work? How would you describe your style in three words?

 

Our style completely varies. On the outside looking in our designs are very alternative, fun, loud, bold, in your face etc. But we create and design all sorts of wedding stationery. For example we have a huge vintage range which is much more muted and understated. But basically our style is whatever the customer requests.

Could you tell us some information about your packages/prices?

 

Every customer of ours wants something different so there is no set price, plus every customer needs different amounts of prints and different products so we generally work out our prices based on exactly what the customer needs.

 

Do you have any tips for couples in selecting their wedding stationery?

 

We don’t do the hard sell to anyone. If you like our designs and our style we are delighted to supply you with wedding stationery. Our only tip would be cheaper never means better, and you only get married once! Or twice!

 

Are you seeing any trends for the year ahead?

 

We like to think we have set a lot of trends and reinvented how people think about their wedding stationery. You just have to look at the general landscape and its easy to see that we have influenced a lot of couples weddings and designers. We have a lot of new designs and trends up our sleeves at all times and we will continue to change things up moving forward always.

 

Can you give us a teaser about what you are working on now?
