Five Make-up Essentials For The Winter Months

We’re thrilled to welcome back our resident bridal beauty expert Catherine Bailey this afternoon who is helping us all with our winter skin care and make up. Not just for winter brides, but for those of us who want to look our very best during the cold season too, Catherine shares her top products for glowy beautiful skin.

Tinted Moisturiser

I think that full-coverage foundation can look rather obvious in cold daylight, so I recommend a dewy tinted moisturiser for the winter months. This will warm your skin tone a little, while giving you extra protection from cold air and chilly winds. My personal favourite is Liz Earle Sheer Skin Tint, which has SPF 15 and comes in three flattering shades.

Of course, if you’re lucky enough to be going skiing or snowboarding this winter, a higher SPF sunscreen is essential to prevent sunburn. I always use La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50+ Tinted Cream as it has a natural tan colour and offers fab protection from sun glare on higher slopes.

Illuminator

Many people find that their complexion tends to look duller in the winter months, so I think that a pearlescent face illuminator is definitely an essential product.

I highly recommend NARS Illuminator as it looks very subtle, even in cold winter daylight – my personal favourite shade is ‘Hot Sand’ which is a pearly, light peach lotion which just makes you look like you have naturally great skin. Or try Charlotte Tilbury’s brand new Brightening Youth Glow if you have paler skin that needs a boost.

Tinted Lip Balm

A nourishing, tinted lip balm is another winter essential. If you like a soft red tint to your lips, try the gorgeous Korres Lip Butter in ‘Pomegranate’. If you prefer a glossier finish, Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector comes in lots of pretty shades and smells of vanilla.

Cream Blusher

Cream blusher is fantastic in the winter, when your cheeks tend to be a bit drier from all that central heating and chilly winds, and a nice neutral shade will really warm up your face while looking really natural in cold winter light.

My personal favourite is Liz Earle Healthy Glow Cream Blush in ‘Camellia’, a light peachy-pink, but I also love Stila Convertible Colour in ‘Lillium’, a neutral pink, and ‘Peony’, a pinky-brown. Or try the much-hyped Glossier Cloud Paints for a subtle wash of colour that lasts well.

Waterproof Mascara

Make sure that you choose a long-lasting mascara in the winter months, so that it doesn’t run down your cheeks if the cold wind makes your eyes water!

Benefit Roller Lash is my personal favourite – although it’s not marketed as a waterproof mascara, I do find it to be a resilient formula. A great budget alternative is Max Factor False Lash Effect mascara in the Waterpoof formula.
