For me, a wedding is about the couple first, then their family and friends, and then all the details and elements that go to make the day unique and special. The day can pass in a blur, and I know that preserving the memories of moments, venue and guests is important to you. I am generous with my time on the day and in the edit, and will try to capture it all. At the same time, the heart of the job is still the classic bride and groom portrait - the mantlepiece shot - that has been the photographer's goal ever since cameras first came to a wedding. A great wedding portrait should capture not only the couple as people but of what draws them together. Why did they fall in love? At every wedding, whether I am booked for a long day or a short shoot, the photo session with the bride and groom is the centre of what it's all about for me.
I am naturally a people person, and I don't think it is possible to take good photos without rapport and communication. That said, I do not think it is the photographer's role to be the life and soul of the party, and it is right to be sensitive to the couple's own style and needs. So it varies a bit - at some weddings I get on quietly with the work in a background role and in others I am far more outgoing. With the traditional "groups" too, things depend on the the vibe - Do the groomsmen really help to organise or do I need to be more proactive? - Are the guests naturally good at posing or do they need a little more direction? So it varies.
The big answer is to look beyond the wedding day to the marriage - the party is not the life! But the photographer's answer is to 1) have fun with a colour scheme 2) be creative but respect the traditions 3) really relax on the day
I love classical symmetry and perspective, so I enjoy all sorts of things from the Dutch masters of architectural drawing through to the films of Wes Anderson. The use of light and deep shade in a Rembrandt is echoed in the some of the great photographers. I enjoy the portrait work of Lange, Penn, Leibovitz and McCurry, admire the great news photographers like McCullin, and love the architectural photography of the great Frederick Evans. However, as a wedding photographer, in a sense, you need to work with the style of the event and the couple. These days, many weddings have a very strong sense of artistic direction, often from the bride herself, and I try to synchronise with that as far as I can. That means not only how one shoots on the day, but in the edit afterwards, especially in the treatment of colour. A photographer can't change their eye and basic aesthetic sensibility, but they can take a lead from their clients in how they use their skills.
That's a hard question! Some weddings involving my own family have been personally very significant, but for more general clients I think of two where the colour scheme just blew me away. Rainbow and a yellow ochre / russet colour palette as it happens. There have also been some awesome venues too, from hotels to barns, cathedrals to quaint chapels. I tend to feel that my favourite wedding shoot is generally the last one I did! I find wedding photography intensely rewarding and emotionally engaging, so I find myself buzzing with them all!
