Fun & Happy 1331 York Wedding With Cool Bridal Denim Jacket

Hannah and Ian (AKA Lofty) had the most awesome 1331 York wedding, which was modern, cool and fun. Their day was held in winter in the historic location of York, right in the heart of the city. This meant transport wasn’t an issue and created a really relaxed atmosphere.

Hannah and Ian really made their wedding theirs. Choosing the things they love and ditching the things they don’t. They envisioned a fun and easy day where their guests enjoyed themselves and by the looks of these images, everyone had a blast.

Do look out for cool banners, sweet embroidery, denim jackets, amazing sweet treats and a cute pup. Of course, Hannah and Ian both looked incredible and they both looked so happy.

1331 York Wedding

The Proposal

Not romantic but there was none. We had been together 12 years, already had the house and the dog so the commitment was there and I spent the first 10 years telling Lofty, while I loved going to weddings, I didn’t always see the point for us.

When I dramatically changed my mind it was very much a joint decision to have a wedding. No engagement, we just booked our venue and then started to tell people!

The Vision

Part of what made me change my mind about getting married was having all the people we loved together in a room celebrating. So the vision was all about it being easy and fun (but also looking a bit beautiful) so that everyone, enjoyed themselves.

Budget

We never really set a budget – we had a fairly small wedding which thankfully meant this wasn’t too much of an issue.

The Venue

1331 is a bar/restaurant in the centre of York where we lived which had a marriage license so we could do everything in one place. It was a lovely small venue (we had about 50).

It has a very cool 1920s vibe and has lots of little extras like a secret cinema and a courtyard. I loved the fact it was in town so meant there were no transport issues for guests. We fell in love with the relaxed atmosphere too and while I worried about downstairs being open, we had exclusive use of upstairs and the staff (and food) were phenomenal.

Your Outfits

I didn’t believe people that said you had to get a wedding dress so far in advance (it’s true). I started dress shopping in the August but was hampered by needing to find a ‘plus size’ dress.

I found lots I liked but the final was a completely different style I fell in love with that was form fitting and lace from David’s Bridal. I also chose a veil and had ordered a customised denim jacket from Bee that I loved. It also had a hand-stitched patch inside with a note from my uncle we had lost the previous summer.

Lofty’s outfit was even harder to find. He needed larger sizes and all suit companies seemed to think that fun and modern suits only fit certain body types (there is definitely a gap in the market here!). He eventually managed to get a handmade tweed suit made with some personalisation stitched into the jacket and waistcoat. He only picked this up 18 hours before the wedding!

The Ceremony & Music

It was a nice short service. My brother played the ceremony music and I walked down the aisle to Elbow’s ‘One Day Like This’. Lofty’s sister and a friend did readings.

My brother also did an acoustic version of ‘Mardy Bum’ as our first dance that evening and sourced the fantastic band.

Your Photographer & Filmmaker

I dreaded finding a photographer. I hate getting my photo taken and Lofty doesn’t really like posing. Paul and Kelly were recommended by my bridesmaid they was using them at her wedding. I loved their website and the relaxed moments they captured. We met them to discuss the wedding and instantly wanted to book. We love each and every one of our photos.

The Styling & Decor

I found a lot through Instagram and as a not very creative person, just found the person who I liked and said ‘can you do your creative thing please?’.

The on the day styling was done with Forge Events and Lydia from 1331, who just made everything look so amazing, I knew I wanted a dessert table so ordered from both Finch Bakery and LouLous. All on the day signage, name cards (agate slices) and displays, including the chalkboard paintings, were done by Bee Davies and they tied in with the jacket and the venue perfectly complementing the 1920s style.

The last things I ordered were some banners with our favourite song lyrics on to hang behind us on the top table.

The Honeymoon

We had our dream Bali/Hong Kong honeymoon booked but COVID has put that on hold for now as we got married about a week before lockdowns.

Memorable Moments

Having Polaroid cameras and I Spy cards made and people snapping away.
The dad/daughter dance to a raucous ‘500 miles’ by the Proclaimers.
Getting photos taken in a busy town centre (and also back where we had our first kiss as teenagers) and then on the empty streets in the evening.
Seeing everyone wear the charity pin wedding favours.
Dancing till 2am.

Advice For Other Couples

Have a dessert table and order too much (keep the leftovers in your freezer).
Don’t DIY.
No one knows what you wanted it to look like so don’t stress too much about the little things.
Do what you want and leave out the things you don’t.
