Whimsical wonderland weddings blog welcomes our newest sponsor Katherine Ashdown Photography!! Katherine is a genuinely lovely lady, who is taking the wedding photography industry by storm with fun fresh and beautiful images. Katherine is providing engagement, boudoir, wedding and rock the dress photography packages and is available across the UK and beyond. Today I have the delight of chatting to Katherine about her fabulous photography business.
Hi Katherine, firstly could you tell Whimsical Wonderland Weddings readers a little bit about you?
I am a real girlie girl and love everything to do with weddings; shoes, veils, tiaras, flowers, jewellery, hair, makeup, stunning buildings, lovely food, champagne, dresses… LOVE! My cat is my favorite person, my favorite films are period dramas and I would always pick a skiing holiday over lying on a beach, I am a chocohoholic and I always look at the dessert menu before the main menu in a restaurant! When I have a camera in my hand my mind takes over and I never get tired. My mum taught me that photos of scenery are boring unless there is a person in the picture…. now I LOVE shooting people!
How did you get into the world of photography and start shooting weddings?
Originally from the Lake District I did the usual; A levels, College, Uni. When the lecturers were steering us in the direction of all things arty, I knew I loved taking photographs but always felt there was something missing. It wasn’t until I took some photos of my nieces and nephew at just 18 that I realised what it was… I love shooting PEOPLE! After this I got a job in a developing lab learning all I could about photographic printing and immersing myself in other people’s photographs along the way (including some very funny ones!). Myself and my sister then decided to begin a business together over 10 years ago originally concentrating on families and children. Always shooting outside in the stunning Lakes scenery, word quickly spread about what was then a relatively new concept of outdoor natural, professional photography. Following a recommendation I was contacted by a bride who had almost no budget for her wedding photography; she asked if I would I mind doing a few shots for pretty much a sandwich and a packet of crisps! At just 19 I had never really thought about wedding photography but agreed to go along and give it a go… Despite my nerves and doing my very first wedding on an old 1970s Nikon FILM camera – I loved it! Being part of someone’s wedding day is just MAGICAL! Since then I have traveled, worked on cruise ships and lived in several parts of the UK, before eventually relocating to Norfolk to be closer to my sister. I have spent the last four years building up the business and learning all I can from books, courses and most importantly from 100s of great clients, friends and photographers along the way!
What do you aim to achieve for your clients?
As above – simply the Magic of their day! Those momentary fleeting expressions, every detail, the laughter and the fun!
What sort of style is your wedding photography?
Natural and fun but still young, fresh and a bit funky!
Could you tell us some information about your packages?
They all include 3 things I feel are vital in a wedding package;
1. Full day coverage from getting ready to your first dance (none of this 6/8 hour stuff!)
2. A disc of high-resolution copyright free images
3. An Engagement Shoot to put you at ease in front of the camera before your big day!
The Collection ranges from £1100 to £2300 and all packages can be adapted to suit your individual needs. All of my Albums are produced by the amazing Queensberry, one of the best album suppliers in the world.
Do you have any tips for couples on their big day and in selecting their wedding photographer?
ENJOY it! So many couples spend so long worrying about timings and whether everything is going to plan they forget to have fun! Forget the camera is on you and laugh a lot!
I always tell my couples to select a photographer whose work you LOVE. Their images should tug at your heartstrings and if they do, you know you have found the right one. Put great importance on choosing a photographer, the images are a record of your memories for the next 50 years! I recently had a bride confirm my availability before booking their venue – now that someone who ‘gets’ how important their photographs are!
Thank you very much Katherine!! Be sure to stop by at Katherine’s website to get further information and to get in contact with the lovely lady herself 🙂
