Pretty & Soft Blue Winter Barn Wedding Ideas

I love how this wedding ideas editorial creates a twist on the winter barn wedding, by giving it a fresh and bright update. Using a palette of icy pale blues brings the traditional moody, rustic and cosy tones used in winter weddings, a really modern feel. The blue hues were interspersed with greys, blushes and metallics for a really luxe and elegant style.

There is so much to take in, from the delicate watercolour stationery suite to flawless bridal hair and make up and stunning gowns and accessories. The tablescapes were dressed in flowing fabric, romantic candles and whimsical blooms. Them there was a striking cake table set up and also a beautiful greenery hoop backdrop, which makes a real statement piece.

Creative director and stylist Tulle and Blue curated the shoot beautifully, with Joanna Briggs Photography capturing the atmosphere just perfectly. I think those of you planning late Winter and early Spring weddings are going to be left feeling very inspired indeed.

Winter Blues Into Spring Barn Wedding Ideas

I first saw Lapstone Barn at a wedding fair and immediately fell in love with it’s simplicity and the natural beauty of the stonework and how it sat in the landscape. A vision of muted blues warmed with blush and set off with soft greys came to mind which complimented the warmth of the Cotswold stone.

I wanted to show the barn off rather than just use it for a shoot – all the lovely textures and colours made stunning backdrops. The installations were simple and relatable with a sweetheart table for bride and groom, a table set for for guests and a cake table. The outside spaces enabled the team to utilise some fun props !

The Cotswolds is my favourite part of the country – the beautiful pale stone, quaint villages and endless countryside. So for me the barn was a perfect setting for this shoot and it made a gorgeous backdrop for all the amazing work the vendors came together to produce. The pale colours of this shoot worked perfectly with the bright but rustic setting of Lapstone. I felt so inspired by the romantic vibe of the shoot and loved every moment capturing it!

Having styled the shoot I then set about making some special showcase accessories to compliment the gowns – which I chose for their romance and elegance. I wanted to add lots of shades of blue to show how colour can be incorporated into your bridal look and still look classic. So I made several pieces to compliment the amazing hairstyles created by Claire – they were shown to perfection by our lovely models Fi and Amy! I used champagne coloured wire and brass leaves to make the pale blue crystals pop, mixing them with pearls and dainty glass beads, pale blue German opals and sapphire Swarovski crystals. A long but plain silk tulle veil gave an ethereal look to some of the images. My capes – one short one made from oyster silk velvet and lined with silk satin and two longer veil capes (one made from Point d’Esprit and the other from silk tulle) were both hand beaded and included vintage lace – inspire brides to add a lovely cover up to their bridal look – especially in the Winter and early Spring when it can get chilly!! My little velvet heirloom ring box was captured by Jo on the flat lay images – each one is handcrafted by me in the UK!

I love all things vintage, especially French and knew instantly from the mood board that the grey shutters painted with Annie Sloane chalk paint along with the French Jardiniere would be perfect to create simple and elegant backdrops that would both tone with and compliment the gorgeous foliage garland and foliage hoop. This was used to create the backdrops for the sweetheart table, welcome sign, table plan and cake display – all accessorised with a blue chiffon runner, vintage brass taper candlesticks with various size French and Nordic candles in complimenting tonal and accent colours.

Inspiration for the Winter set backdrop came from the the blue wooden panelling outside the barn used to create and provide contrast to the natural wood of the vintage skis and the textures and tones of the foliage and delicate flowers used in the floral hoop, accessorised with different textural accessories comprising of fur throws, vintage skates, vintage wooden sledge, along with cream and gold Moroccan style lanterns.

In selecting accessories to compliment the props, I chose tones of greys, blues and whites for the candles in varying sizes and heights, with warming accents of vintage brass and gold glass votives – these added varying heights to our set ups and gave a beautiful twinkling glow to our Winter theme.

The table settings were quite traditional and very elegant but with a nod to the contemporary – it was lovely to showcase blue table covers with with the decadent glassware and flatware. The trio of cakes were simple and stylish with a hint of blue.

I tried to capture the wintry yet warm vibes from the mood board, with soft blues and rich golds alongside whites and blushes. The gorgeous ‘Marianne’ Panda Anemones were a focal piece for the shoot, and worked wonderfully with the foraged blossom from my cutting patch, and the soft grey foliage in the bouquet. I included some dried Nigella and Scabious seed heads in the florals as a nod to the season. Dried flowers are a beautiful way to add texture and colour during the winter months, and are becoming increasingly popular with couples at all times of the year. My design work is very much driven by the changing seasons around me, so I loved including some Larch twigs in there too, alongside the more spring-like blooms. And I couldn’t resist the delicate little blue Muscari (grape hyacinth) nestled around the bouquet. They are the perfect way to add interest and draw the eye in to a design, and work well with so many different palettes.

When I saw Jane’s mood board I instantly fell in love with the theme. The colour scheme of soft hues of French blues, blush and warm vintage gold gave me the feeling of romance and ethereal elegance. With the beautiful country venue situated in the Cotswolds as the backdrop my ideas flowed.

For the makeup, I chose bronze and gold shades knowing it would complement the theme perfectly. As a makeup artist it’s all about the skin – it’s your canvas. I believe bridal makeup should be about showing off what we have naturally, not about hiding behind a mask of foundation, it should enhance the face not change it. With this in mind and using the 2019 catwalk trends as inspiration, I opted to keep the skin on our beautiful models light and dewy with a fresh sun kissed finish knowing that this is suitable for any skin tone. Airbrushed makeup is perfect for giving a flawless finish without the heaviness, so I added in a drop of highlighter to the airbrush foundation which helped lift the skin and create a natural glow.

I kept the eyes neutral using soft bronze and taupe with a hint of gold for highlighting. I kept emphasis on luscious lashes to frame the eye. Bronze really complements blue and worked so well on both models. On the lips I used the just bitten look as inspiration, applying the lip with a flush of colour from the centre and feathering it out with a fluffy brush which really enhances the lip without overloading on colour. It’s perfect for a light and airy finish which is bang on trend for this year’s brides.

The stationery I created for the shoot was solely inspired by the fabulous mood board created by Jane from Tulle & Blue. The muted blue tones mixed with the greys, burnt gold and greens were the focus for me. I wanted to design something soft, whimsical and beautiful to enhance the overall elegant and mystical tone of the shoot. Everything has been hand printed and hand made with love and also hand painted – using a watercolour wash to create the backdrop to all artworks. Everything I have designed is in keeping with all the other pieces giving a natural flow; stationery items include, a pocket-fold invitation with matte gold foiling, place name tags, gold foiled menu cards, table numbers, seating plan cards which hang from the foliage hoop and a welcome sign.

The overall aim of the shoot was to showcase how a rustic barn setting can be very elegant and classic. I wanted to make the barn cosy and welcoming with use of soft flowing fabrics and candlelight to add to add romance and warmth. We all had the best day – working with so many talented creative ladies was truly amazing – it’s how the magic happens!
