Tell couples about your experience and approach
I predominantly photograph weddings in Scotland but my partner lives in London so I often do English weddings. I also try to do one or two international weddings every year and make a holiday out of it. I started my business with my best friend in 2010 and can honestly say I absolutely love it. Not everything about it obviously - I don't particularly enjoy marketing, developing new business plans or DIY in the office. However, what I do love is pushing the button, travelling to new places, meeting people, seeing new venues and experiencing new cultures.
What can couples do to get the most out of their wedding photography on the day?
The more time I have to work the better. I can be more creative when there are fewer demands on my time. Plus it means any spur of the moment ideas can happen as we’ll have plenty of time to work with. We would also have a chat before your wedding so we can plan it out in detail. The more I know the smoother it’ll run on the day. Timings, relationships, surprises, hopes and locations, all the thoughts in your head are really useful for me to photograph the day you’ve envisaged.
Are you super chatty or will be you be a fly on the wall?
I’m a pretty chatty person and I like to think of myself as a professional wedding guest. I don’t create scenes or even suggest ideas to your guests as I want the photos to be as natural as possible. But I do like making new friends and having a nice time while I work. That way your guests are as comfortable as possible and those genuinely emotional moments shine through in the photos.
What are your artistic influences?
I don’t really have any artistic influences except for Dan (my business partner) and the other photographers I work with. I regularly go to photography exhibitions and I see what my contemporaries are doing on social media but I prefer to experiment and play around engaging with you, your guests and new venues is all the inspiration I need.
What was your favourite wedding shoot, and why?
A wedding I did at Harelaw Farm a couple of years ago has to be my favourite. It had all of my favourite elements: a fun couple, a lot of guests, my favourite colleagues, spontaneity, epic venue, lambs, highland coos, lots of outdoor space including a river and a pretty bridge and finally, I got some pot plants from the owner I’d been looking for for ages. All the guests were very friendly and funny. The couple was eccentric and effortlessly cool. They knew exactly what they wanted but there was a lot of improvisation too. It was all planned perfectly and everyone looked like they were having non-stop fun.
What kinds of moments are you looking to capture?
Natural moments. I predominantly look for smiles, happy crying, emotions, activity and warm hugs. Whether it’s children playing games, a best friend you haven’t seen for ages, a proud parent or an epic dance move, I’m ready and prepared to capture all the goings on at your wedding.
Why should couples choose you as a photographer?
I’m very friendly, worldly and experienced. My experience means I’m ready for the vast majority of situations a wedding may present. I find it easy to make friends and everybody feels comfortable around me. And I’ve travelled a lot, spent a great deal of time in other cultures and meeting different people. I’m open minded, interested in you and want to find out what makes you a great couple. I want to hear all of your ideas, from mild to wild.
What is the most important thing to you when you photograph weddings?
Interaction. That is probably what I’m looking for above everything else. I seldom photograph people by themselves unless it’s a really pensive / poignant moment. For me, weddings are about sharing the love and happiness. You’ve invited all your favourite people and I assume you want to be photographed with them to remember all the delightful moments.
What's the most important thing couples should know about you before they book?
I am from New Zealand, because of this I have a keen interest in nature and wildlife. I love outdoor photoshoots even in the rain (I must admit though, the majority of people don’t want to go out in the rain on their wedding day). Wildlife watching and hiking are my passions and I have a mini gallery of animal and landscape photos in my house.
